USATOWA was started in 1978 to promote and organize Tug of War in the United States.  USATOWA became a member of the Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) that same year.  The first US team competed in the World Championships in Ireland in 1978.  USATOWA has had men’s teams competing in the World Championships every two years since 1978.  Women have competed at the World Championships since 1986.

USATOWA hosted the World Championships in 1984, 1998, 2004 and 2014.  USATOWA has also hosted the United States Championships each year since 1979.  USATOWA has held Indoor Championships since 1995 and has competed in Indoor Championships around the world.  USATOWA has also competed in the Oceanic Championships, in which countries on the Pacific Rim compete.

USATOWA has represented the United States at the World Games (non-Olympic sports) in outdoor and indoor Tug of War since 1983.

There are over 50 countries that are members of TWIF.  TWIF is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the governing body of International Tug of War.  Tug of War was an Olympic sport until 1920 and is working on a return to the Olympics soon.

Tug of War is truly an all-weather sport, played indoors as well as out.  If you’re interested in trying a fun and unique sport, contact us at USATOWA.com
